What is a Super Visa?

A Super Visa is a visitor visa for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It can be valid for up to 10 years and allows parents and grandparents to remain in Canada for up to 5 years per visit.

The main advantage of the super visa is the length of stay. The regular visitor visa is valid for 6 months and must be extended whereas the super visa is valid for 10 years and allows for stays of up to 5 years. Even if the applicants are visa exempt for entry into Canada, they can still apply for the super visa in order to extend the maximum length of stay.

Who Can and who Cannot Apply For a Super Visa

Only permanent residents or Canadian citizens can bring their grandparents or parents to Canada through a Super Visa. The applicants must be applying from outside of Canada and will have to have the visa printed abroad as well. They will also have to comply with general immigration requirements which can include police clearances and other background and criminality checks. The requirements for the application are outlined below.

The Application Process

Before you apply, you will need a letter of invitation from your child or grandchild who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. The letter of invitation will have to include a promise of financial support for the duration of your visit and a list of people in the household you will be staying in as well as a copy of your child or grandchild’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document.

You will also need proof of your child or grandchild’s income which can be a notice of assessment (NOA), T4/T1 for the most recent tax year, employment Insurance stubs, an employment letter including salary and date of hiring, pay stubs, or bank statements.

The last thing you will need is proof of payment for Canadian medical insurance, and, if necessary, documentation confirming you have undergone the immigration medical exam. The medical insurance must be valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry and must have at least $100,000 coverage.

Once you have all the correct documents in order, you can apply online or on paper. Once the application is processed, you will most likely be required to give your biometric information.

Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Canada

Another option for immigrating to Canada as the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident is the sponsorship program. Through this program, the relatives have the chance to become permanent residents of Canada to settle and live with their family. The sponsorship program requires a financial commitment from the sponsor and a slightly different application process.

FAQs

No, unfortunately a super visa does not allow its holders to work while in Canada as they are technically considered visitors to the country

Yes! The Super Visa is a temporary resident visa allowing multiple entries into Canada with a duration of up to 24 months without the need for status renewal.

One of the requirements for the super visa is that the applicant must be outside of Canada at the time of application.

An alternative to the super visa is the family sponsorship program which allows Canadian permanent residents and citizens to sponsor their family members allowing them to become permanent residents as well. The super visa itself is not a permanent residency stream and therefore will not automatically allow those who hold it to apply for permanent residency.

The processing times will vary depending on your location and situation. Generally it will take upwards of 9 months but you can check the approximate processing time on the official website here.

The income cutoff will vary depending on how many people are living in the household. For one person, the minimum necessary gross income is $25,921, for 2 people, $32,270, for 3 people, $39,672. You can check the specifics here.

The main reason for refusal is lack of documentation proving sufficiently strong ties to your home country. Get in contact with us and we can help you gather the correct documents to satisfy the criteria and help you get to Canada efficiently.
