Permanent residents who have lived in Canada for a minimum of 1,095 days, or 3 years, within the 5 years previous to submitting an application may qualify for Canadian citizenship.

There are different factors that determine eligibility for a person to become a Canadian citizen, but Canada makes the process approachable and possible for those who have worked hard towards becoming established residents.

Requirements to Qualify for Canadian Citizenship

In order to qualify for Canadian citizenship you must:

Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days within the past 5 years.

Have maintained legal status during your stay in Canada.

Have filed income taxes, if applicable.

Meet language proficiency requirements, if between 18 and 54 years old.

Take Canadian knowledge test, if between 18 and 54 years old.

Not have been convicted of a criminal offense.

You are eligible to apply for citizenship if you’re a permanent resident, if you’ve lived in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years, filed your taxes if applicable, passed a citizenship test, and proven your language skills. The eligibility criteria may differ if you are a minor or if you are a Canadian applying on behalf of your adopted child. If you are a past Canadian citizen or a current or former Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) member, some other rules and processes may apply to your situation specifically.

Applications take around 25 months to process depending on your personal circumstances. To become a citizen you must have lived in Canada for at least 3 years out of the last 5 years.

Does Canada allow dual citizenship?
